Balos Lagoon is one of the most photographed spots on the island of a Crete and a famous place on all tourist guides for Greece. The hypnotizing turquoise waters, the white and pinkish colored sand and the panoramic landscape makes Balos Lagoon a dreamy spot to visit and the shallow waters makes it suitable for all ages. Beyond the rocks at the boundaries of the lagoon, the water is deeper and colder, ideal for a snorkeling. Balos Lagoon is located in Gramvousa Peninsula, at the northwestern tip of Crete where also “tame” and “wild” Gramvousa can be found. Two small uninhabited but must-see islands that are very popular tourist attraction. “Tame” Gramvousa except of the gorgeous beach with the crystal clear aquamarine waters, host the remains of a Venetian fort, the castle of Gramvousa built in the 1500s and near the port you cans see Gramvousa’s shipwreck. The wider region of Gramvousa and Balos Lagoon is one of the most protected areas in Eastern Mediterranean and a Natura 2000 protected region that hosts more than 100 species of bird and 400 species of plants. In Gramvousa’s caves Mediterranean seals take refuge where the endangered sea turtle Carreta Carreta comes to forage. A dreamy- like destination!
